AWS and Capital One Visa - Support us

|
With a hard economy hitting us all over the world it is difficult to be generous today. The AWS has been standing a little over 20 years, as President I have volunteered my work to keep China's national art alive in New York and the world. The AWS was made an offer to join with Capital One Visa credit card. This is a normal card which anyone over 18 years of age can apply for. 1-3% of your monthly spending comes to the AWS as a donation. Your support will help the AWS continue its work spreading China's culture as well as the keeping the Wu Shu Youth program alive. This too is a program where a small donation is given per family not per child and in return the family gets a tax certificate at end of the year and well behave educated children who respect themselves. There is NO annual membership fee so show support and apply today!!!

Superstars of Dance on NBC
Superstars of Dance Sunday January 4 at 9pm EST
I enjoy dance competitions very much but I must say that I was disgusted to see that representing true China traditional dancers were a bunch of Shaolin Monks performing as well. It is a dance competition not a performing arts competition.
I have been teaching 29 years focusing on technique and explaining form movements as it is applied to combat situations. I am bothered by ignorance that Wu Shu is a dance. If you type in english the words Martial Arts and translate to Chinese Characters you will see Wu Shu comes up. To see this nonsense on USA Television just makes my work go down the drain.
Worst of all as a judge there sits a Shaolin Monk who gives every performance an 8.0. This show will continue on Monday nights so if you missed it you can see it. Performers are actually dancing in their chosen crafts and along comes Shaolin kids performing Modern Wu Shu Skills and Iron Shirt demonstrations resting their bodies on Spear heads as they are elevated by 8 monks. This does not belong in this type of competition. Now I will hear how great Wu Shu dance is.

Olympics: Nike designs Wu Shu shoes for the Olympics
Tackling a Martial Art
Change comes slowly for the age-old Chinese martial art of wushu. But this year, it's joining forces with the swoosh.
In an unlikely move for a U.S. footwear company, Nike is joining the small Chinese market of wushu shoemakers. The modern version of the sport, a close cousin of kung fu, emphasizes aesthetic and athletic performance over basic fighting. While it isn't an official Olympic sport, an Olympic-sanctioned tournament will take place this summer.
That was enough for Nike to jump in. The shoes would have to survive a host of punishing moves: rapid accelerations and braking; 720-degree gymnastic-like spins; and the use of weapons including broadswords, staffs and double-edged swords (see picture).
In a Beijing park, a four-person Nike team sought out septuagenarian Master Wu Bin, who was teaching hundreds of students, for his help. He agreed, and work eventually shifted to Nike's Beaverton, Ore., campus, where researchers slapped scores of reflective markers onto U.S. wushu athletes and their weapons while 16 high-speed video cameras recorded data. "Reflective markers were flying," said Jeff Pisciotta, who studies athlete biomechanics in the Nike lab. Researchers from the University of Beijing and the University of Shanghai eventually pitched in.
The final shoe, to be sold for $80 at Nike.com, uses sturdy kangaroo leather instead of the typical canvas and a lightweight gum rubber for more-precise pivoting during moves. An unexpected problem: painful shoelaces, because wushu athletes traditionally hit their shoes with their palms as part of their performance. Nike created pockets to hide shoelace tips for easier slapping.

Olympics: Beijing November 4 to 16 - Last Update 11-17-07 NYC time
I arrived November 4th at 6pm. My student in Beijing had booked me in a hotel on a dark alley side street near wangfujing. Hotel reminded me of the Shaolin Temple Hotel, those of you who have stayed there know what I mean.
November 5th I went to Beiyuan Hotel which is one of the hotels the IWuF has selected for the Championship. This afternoon the China Olympic Committee will host a meeting at my hotel. I have plans to meet with the Beijing 2008 Organization within the next two days.
I will keep adding to this page each day as I progress. Yu Cheng Hui where are you? I want to learn your two handed sword. For those of you who do not recognize the name Yu Cheng Hui played the evil general in Shaolin Temple movie which was Jet Li's first film.

Councilman Peter Vallone Jr and our Wu Shu kids
DiTan Wu Shu program for kids is a Free program taught to kids from all boroughs of New York City. This program is made possible through the support of Councilman Peter F. Vallone Jr. The kids were happy that you made the time one Monday evening to come, view and share a few words with the kids. My goal is to open a warehouse type school because Wu Shu needs a high ceiling and at least 2700 square foot training space. My work then will open its doors 6 days a week where the student will have a 2nd home away from home. I plan to offer academic tutoring. None of this is possible without people who have the power to make a difference and sharing in my dream. Donations and contributions help to run the AWS office but we the AWS need federal funding, state funding to open a school. Wu Shu will make its debut during the Olympic Games next year in Beijing 2008 and the world will see all its beauty. Remember all the beauty of sport and discipline in the world means nothing without the proper heart and leadership.

Wellness Program in Puerto Rico
Master Edward Aguirre was invited to San Juan Puerto Rico to introduce a wellness program to the Condado Plaza Hotel and Casino. For the last 3 weeks since June 19 we have structured a program for all employees of the hotel. Close to 300 participants have been motivated to partake in this new exercise program that includes yoga, pilates, stretching, conditioning, breathing exercises, self defense, boxing, nutrition advice and a little bit of Wu Shu. All the participants range from mid 20's to early 60's and they all love the motivation and the feeling they get when they are finished with each class.
The program will last until August 15th.

Puerto Rico Wu Shu Society wins 3 2nd place medals in Russia
It is 3am and I just arrived 12 hours ago. At this moment I wish that USA athletes would have responded to this invitation because it was a great experience. I want to congratulate Reynaldo Rosario and Emily Katy Burgos students of Shifu Hector Santiago of Puerto Rico Wu Shu Society. I am very proud that with only 2 months to prepare since my seminar last december they decided to go and Win! Reynaldo competed in 3 events agains 15-18 athletes and emerged with a 2nd Place in Nanquan with a total score of 9.483 and a 2nd Place in Gun Shu with a total of 9.566, his third event he came in 7th Place with 9.3. Emily Katy took 2nd Place in Nan Dao with a total score of 9.133 in her Nanquan she took 7th Place with a total of 8.933 and her Nangun she took 5th place with 9.083. Since Puerto Rico is considered part of the USA they represented the American Wu Shu Society but the credit should go to Puerto Rico. Congratulations once again for your courage and sacrifices, imagine two caribbean people in Russia against powerful and serious athletes from many regions of Russia and East Europe.
I want to thank our most gracious host Ms. Eleonora Volokontseva. She impressed me more then anyone in my Wu Shu life. This lady is not only serious about Wu Shu but in every aspect super professional. She said we are the first group of Wu Shu athletes that has set foot in Russia for competition. If the IWuF Championship last year been in Moscow as the original plan then we would have been the 2nd group.....
